Native American Heritage Month

starry bison

Did you know that the Lakota word for "buffalo" is "tatanka?" The Lakota tribe's nomadic lifestyle was interwoven with the buffalo migration pattern. Each part of the animal was used—from eating to crafting household utensils—no part was wasted.  The Lakota are just one group of many that make up the Plains Native Americans.

Children's Literacy Initiative celebrates Native American Heritage Month with great books! Honor the traditions, artistry, activism, and everyday lives of Native peoples with these high-quality read alouds by Indigenous authors and illustrators. Check out these awesome resources from our friends over at PBS to supplement your class's learning exploration of Native American culture.
