Once you have submitted your resume through the CLI Career Link, a CLI recruiter will review your resume. Our recruitment team takes pride in carefully reading your resume, cover letter, and any supporting documents you may submit. If your resume shows that you have the skills and qualifications that we are looking for, a recruiter will call you to conduct a phone screen interview. If you successfully pass the phone screen interview you will be invited to a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager.

All candidates, whether successful or not, will be contacted by the Human Resources Manager once a decision has been made. If your application is not successful, CLI will maintain your resume for one year in the event other CLI opportunities become available that may meet your skill set and our hiring needs.

Information for Professional Developer Consultant Applicants

What is a Professional Developer Consultant?

A Professional Developer Consultant (PD) is a master’s level certified teacher who has taught for at least five years in grades Pre-K through 3rd grade. PDs are considered to be experts in early childhood literacy and have training and experience in balanced literacy and literacy best practices. PDs guide teachers in setting up child centered, literacy rich classroom environments; and observe, model, co-teach and plan with teachers on effective lessons utilizing best practice comprehensive literacy strategies and methodologies, as well as changing ideas from education thought leaders. A PD is considered to be an independent contractor, and not an employee of CLI.

What Does It Mean to be an Independent Contractor?

As a PD, you are a 1099 contractor, or, more accurately, an independent contractor. This is a legal and tax-related term used in the United States to refer to the type of worker that contracts his or her services out to a business or businesses. The “1099” refers to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) form that an independent contractor receives stating his or her income from a given business in a given tax year. A 1099 contractor is not an employee of the business or businesses with which he or she provides services; instead he or she is an independent contractor, or consultant, who is considered to be self-employed.

It is best to take all questions regarding your tax filing responsibilities, tax benefits/liabilities, and other questions regarding your status as a 1099 independent contractor to your tax accountant. You, alone are responsible for the accurate payment of taxes as assessed by your municipality, state, and federal government.

How Many Hours May I Contract?

PDs have the opportunity to contract from 15 to 25 hours of coaching per week which translates into 360 to 600 hours of coaching per school year. One of the benefits of being an independent contractor is that you have flexibility in scheduling your hours with your teachers. Start dates for contracted work varies by state and district and can start as early as mid-August or as late as January. The consulting year is approximately 24 weeks, not including school holidays and breaks.
How Am I Paid?

PDs accept coaching contracts from CLI according to the number of hours they wish to provide and then invoice CLI on a bi-weekly schedule for the contracted services they perform. Payment for the pre-service Orientation will be paid to you in a lump sum one (1) month after you have begun coaching. Payment for contracted coaching will be paid on a bi-weekly basis upon receipt of your accurate invoices for services provided.

What Else Can I Do As A Professional Developer Consultant?

In addition to their coaching work, some PDs are also interested in content development work and/or facilitating workshops and institutes. After coaching for one year, PDs have the opportunity to contract for this additional work, when work is available.

Do I Need Background Clearances?

Yes. All CLI PDs must comply with each locality, district, and/or state’s specific laws and obtain the necessary background clearances prior to providing professional development services. CLI will provide you with the forms and cover any costs/fees you incur to obtain background clearances when properly submitted on an approved expense report.

Additional PD Information

As a CLI PD, you are expected to attend monthly collaboration meetings, have a computer and scanner, and have the ability to use Excel and email. In addition, we expect you to have or create your own professional development library to help with your consulting work. Although CLI offers you professional development opportunities based on changes in thought leaders, we do expect PDs to stay current with the knowledge and best practices beyond what CLI provides. CLI will not pay for you to attend non-CLI professional development.

How Do I Get Started?

After you have signed a contract with CLI, you will be invited to attend the CLI Orientation that runs five days from 9am – 3pm. Once the Orientation is complete and you have the necessary background clearances and other required paperwork submitted to the Human Resources Manager, you are eligible to begin coaching. Other special workshops and institutes round out your CLI professional development. Orientations are usually held in your local region, however, on occasion you may need to travel outside your region to attend an Orientation. In this case, CLI will cover certain authorized travel expenses, including plane fare and/or hotel/food for PDs traveling overnight to attend an Orientation outside their region.
