Children’s Literacy Initiative works in a variety of school districts comprised of an assortment of demographics, different levels of student achievement and at various degrees of engagement. In the coming school year we will provide services to Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Broward County (FL), Elizabeth (NJ), Passaic (NJ), Willingboro (NJ), Bridgeton (NJ), and Camden (NJ), among others.
CLI is a major force in the Philadelphia region in working to improve the reading proficiency of at-risk students. CLI has provided professional development services to the School District of Philadelphia since the mid-nineties. In Fall 2014, CLI won a highly-competitive contract to recruit and provide the School District of Philadelphia with 58 qualified Early Literacy Specialists in 2014-2016. CLI is also undertaking a significant role within READ By 4th, the ambitious campaign to have all Philadelphia students reading on grade level by 4th grade and has applied to serve as the Literacy Instructional Strategies Lead.
CLI has been working in Chicago schools since 2005, when CPS elected to use our services to strengthen their pre-kindergarten program. Since then, CLI has provided training and coaching to more than 600 teachers, directly benefiting 15,000 students in grades K-3. Our Executive Director has designated Chicago a CLI regional hub, positioning staff and services at our Chicago office for additional growth.
CLI’s partnership with Houston Independent School District (HISD) began through a five-year i3 Scale-up grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education in 2015. The grant allowed CLI to expand to four new districts with high populations of English Language Learners. CLI is currently working with over 100 teachers in seven elementary schools in the district, impacting the lives of nearly 2,500 kindergarten to 3rd grade students.
