Natural disasters can be very traumatic, especially for young children. One way that teachers and parents can help children cope with the devastation and stress of storms like Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, is to read them books to show them how other communities have recovered from natural disasters.

Many of the children served by Children’s Literacy Initiative were displaced from their homes and, in the case of the students of Mitchell Elementary in Houston, their school. That is why we created the Healing Hearts Book Collection. This book collection is comprised of age and culturally appropriate books to help children cope with the emotional trauma they may be experiencing. Watch the video below and learn more about books featured in our collection.

“Marvelous Cornelius” by Phil Bidner and “Green City” by Alan Drummond are two examples of amazing books that tell stories of resilience, hope, and the positive actions of communities working together to recover from natural disasters. We are proud to feature these two books as excellent choices to help support children in their classrooms, and at home.

When you purchase a collection, we are able to get these, along with the rest of this important collection into the hands of the students that need them most. Click the button below to learn more about how to purchase the Healing Hands Collection.
