In Case You Missed It
Our third leadership session was specifically designed for school principals and focused on the pivotal role of leadership in shaping a vibrant culture of lifelong learning within schools. During this session we explored three main learning outcomes:
- How identifying a principal’s leadership style can be a catalyst for lifelong learning in a school
- Exploring modes and opportunities for principals and teachers to learn from and with one another
- Developing strategies for fostering an engaged community of educators and learners,
Led by Regional Executive Director Nicole Bethea and Partnership and Implementation Manager Nicole Unegbu, the session explored its goals through the lens of the 3rd phase of our Core Service Model- Supporting and Building Capacity.
Participants reflected on how their leadership style and approach can significantly influence learning environments and inspire continuous intellectual growth among staff and students. To guide this thinking, we focused on three mindsets that lead to sustained change. These mindsets are:
- Taking a strengths-based approach, versus a deficit approach
- Valuing collective leadership to develop and implement ideas and initiatives that will help teachers and children be successful
- Expressing and modeling empathy - to your staff and the larger school community
The workshop provided actionable strategies for setting expectations, fostering collaboration, and building a community of engaged learners. To solidify our learning, the group also continued our case study examination of South Mountain School, focusing this time on how to use our root cause analysis from last time to create a strong strategic plan for future change.
We wrapped up our time together with a call to action for all leaders: As you reflect on your leadership style, consider how you might strengthen you own mindsets around strength-based approaches, collaborative leadership and empathy?
