This month, we kicked off our inaugural school leaders webinar series, Fostering Equity and Inclusion in Your Schools. Lead by Dr. Diana Greene, CEO, and Erica Holmes-Ware, CPO, we connected with principals, school administrators, and other school and district leaders about our first session topic- Literacy Leadership: Developing a Vision for Empowering Diverse Leaders.
This session explored and developed strategies for ensuring that every student’s voice and potential are nurtured. Participants were able to (and encouraged!) to engage with the content of the session through Q&As, Stop and Jots, live chat, and more!
Fostering an environment where students can find themselves and feel seen to their unique identity was the overarching theme of session #1. As leaders, having this clear vision allows for the baseline to foster equity while acknowledging and celebrating the diverse backgrounds of each child within their school community.
When selecting a framework, it’s important that it’s adapted to fit the needs of your school. For this session, we focused in on CLI’s Framework for Teaching and Learning® Using the framework allows us to have a shared vision grounded in 4 main areas:

Rooted in the science of reading, CLI’s framework is informed and consistently evolving as we continue to learn from experts promoting educator growth and cultivating the genius of Black and Brown children.
During this session, we walked through Marianne Dubuc’s The Lion and the Bird. After reading through the book together, participants viewed a discussion from a classroom and walked through our model text discussion handout.
The Importance of Read Alouds
CLI’s Framework for Teaching and Learning® for read alouds and shared reading focuses in on these practices as they serve to build language comprehension, provide access to worthwhile texts, promote motivation, curiosity, joy and engagement, disrupt the “pedagogy of poverty,” and more! They are powerful practices that support identity development in children and provide them mirrors to their own experiences as well as windows to the world around them.
Diagnosing the current state of teaching and learning is a critical step in understanding how to better connect and dissect literature with children. While highlighting the science of reading, these read alouds also serve to create a communal space where children foster a sense of belonging.
